Because somebody on the Internets asked for it, and because my diploma finally arrived, here's my MA dissertation.

The title: Tropologising Myth: interpreting the megatext of myth through the vernacular of modern shared narrative systems
Which means in English: How all classical myth and literature is basically fanfiction

(You see why we had to give it a poncy title.)

This is changed in only one significant way from the original: the addition of a Creative Commons license. Please note that this means my name and college are in the header, not the title, as that's where I put them for handing essays in to school.

And just to warn anyone wanting to use this for serious academia: it's not very good. I scraped a pass, due partly to laziness and partly to my family life falling down around my ears last year when I was meant to be doing this. Please be careful to critique it thoroughly.

Oooh, excitingness! I will totally read this when my brain is being less chewed to bits by my own dissertation and an essay about how Greek cities catered for the social lives of their inhabitants and what we can learn from this about civic identities.

Hi, I saw this linked in fandom_lounge and couldn't help downloading. Thank you for sharing.

So once upon a time I read a book (I think I own it but I can't find it and have no idea where it is) about how high-fantasy came to be, and Tolkien's influence in the birth of the genre. The first few chapters were all about epic poems though, and Gilgamesh and all the fanfic works derived from it, Illiad and all the fanfic works derived from it, Fairie Queenie, etc. This reminds me so much of that book, I just wish I know what it's called, heh.

Yes, I was procrastinating poking through the older posts.

I've a suspicion it's back in my parent's house. I'll try digging around.

I'll drop by here if I found it.

Really late but I found it!

I found the book I was talking about, it's Tolkien: A Look Behind the Lord of the Rings by Lin Carter.

I'm not sure how useful this is so long after though
