RIP Woolies
Jan. 10th, 2009 04:33 pmSeems every time I go past the blank space where Woolworth's used to be in the High Street, there's somebody gazing in the windows with a forlorn look on their face. It must be catching, or I wouldn't be blogging about it...
I'm not immune either, mind. When the snow was looking likely to leave us in peace a few days ago, I walked past the store on a cold, dreary day only to find that the snow atop the sign was melting, giving the impression that it was raining over Woolworth's, and nowhere else. The graveside mourners looked a bit confused as to what was going on... confused and wet.
It seemed... fitting, somehow. And I can't get the image out of my head. If I'm not careful, I shall find myself, the next time I go down there, drifting over to stare in at the window of a shop I never went in, except for cheap sweets and to ascertain that they still didn't have the DVD or game I wanted.
RIP, Woolworth's. I think I will miss your overstocked Easter Eggs on sale in February, your awful DVD collection, the smell of your Pic 'n' Mix island, after all. At least your fall has touched the heart of a nation; there aren't many store chains that can claim to have ever had such a place in our hearts.
