Lessons of the past...
Apr. 1st, 2010 08:46 pmSince Who withdrawal is ongoing, and since my dad has the flu, we are now 5/6 of the way through The Chase.
Daleks being tipped over and beaten up by Frankenstein's monster! Giant fungi! "They can't get to us in here, there are stairs!" And... a really, really nice way of doing android voices that's freaky without being overly noticeable or 'robotic'.
The Daleks have made a... well, a Doctorbot. It's played by a different actor - presumably, editing an actor into a scene twice was either too expensive or just not possible in 1965 - but it's Hartnell in close-ups, and it's Hartnell's voice.
And for some reason, even when you can't see his bad lip-syncing, it's really obvious that the voice is prerecorded. Not just because he doesn't fluff his lines - there's something subtly different about the sound quality. It sounds artificial, and that's faintly disturbing in all the right ways. Simply put, his voice sounds more believably androidy than any other SF super-robot I've ever seen.
It was a technical necessity at the time, I imagine - but it works so well.
Today, I learned how to do android voices.
Also, Daleks need to say 'AN-NI-HI-LATE' more often.
