I never realised quite how strong the nautical themes in Gilbert & Sullivan were until today... XD

This is both very funny and very aggravating, because now you've got me trying to name the operetta for all of these and I know a lot right off the bat but some I don't and argghhhh!!!! "Never mind the why and wherefore," I know that quote, why can't I place it?

Also, I've now got "There is beauty in the bellow of the blast" in my head. Fortunately, I don't mind that at all. ; )

I did about half of them off the top of my head and the other half by looking up CD tracks on 7digital, so believe me, I know how you feel :p

'There is beauty in the bellow of the blast' is a great one. My favourite's still 'Love unrequited/when you're lying awake with a dismal headache', though.

I think I nailed all the Pirates ones and all the Mikado ones, and I got ones for Sorcerer, Pinafore, Ruddigore, Iolanthe and Yeomen. I'm trying not to cheat by pulling out my CDs to identify the other quotes, but I may have to.

"When you're lying awake with a dismal headache and repose is taboo'ed by anxiety . . " That is a great song, yes.

I think it was my introduction to Gilbert and Sullivan, actually - I found it in an anthology of comic poetry and had it memorised by the time I was ten, and I don't think I saw Mikado until I was eleven.

I can still recite it verbatim. I was clearly a very odd child.

You can recite the whole thing? COOL. (I can do bits and pieces - like "in your shirt and your socks, the black silk with gold clocks, crossing Salisbury Plain on a bicycle", which... um, actually made it into one of my actual dreams one time - but I get confused at the scene transitions.)

The scene transitions are the easy parts! Most of them are signposted. It's the bedding that gets me. What is ticking, anyway?

A sort of canvas-ish fabric they used to make refillable mattresses out of, also the refillable mattresses themselves. People would stuff tickings with straw/hay, feathers, heather, or whatever else remotely fluffy stuff they had on hand.

I believe the fabric usually had narrow blue stripes, but I haven't the faintest idea why. Also if a ticking gets wet you have to empty, dry, and re-fill it or it will mildew, ick.

(Yes, that did actually come out of my head without the intervention of Google or Wikipedia. I blame having read the entire Little House on the Prairie series when I was four years old... *g*)
